ANSWERS:

TUBERCULOSIS INFORMATION QUIZ

TRUE OR FALSE

1. TB is curable but can kill: TRUE

2. TB is limited to Asia, Africa and some parts of southern USA: FALSE

3. The control of tuberculosis includes identifying and treating those with active disease: TRUE

4. TB is no longer a problem in the United States. FALSE
-- Although active TB cases have been steadily declining over the last few years , thanks to intensive public health measures, awareness and management strategies, the number of foreign born cases remains the same. Moreover, the problem continues to be a public health nightmare in the inner cities and in the homeless population of the United States. The number of latent TB infection (LTBI) cases with a positive skin test signifying exposure and infection without active disease remains high at a staggering figure of 15-19 million persons in the US. This too forms a reservoir for further increase in disease cases.

5. A person with untreated active TB can infect 3 persons in the immediate contact. FALSE
-- According to public health data, a person with untreated active TB can infect 15 persons in one year. Hence one of the best ways to control TB is to identify an active case and treat it appropriately and completely.
